When driving a car on a hot day, one can either turn on the air conditioning or simply wind the windows down. Both increase the fuel consumption. Is there a way of estimating which alternative is better for the fuel consumption?
I realise this is a very general question and the answer would involve many variables such as the outside temperature, make/model of car, its speed, how high the air conditioning is turned up (if used), etc. But there might be an empirical formula or a rule of thumb or something like that. Does anyone out there know of one?
